Assistant Professor of Science & Technology Studies: Global STS

The Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University seeks an outstanding scholar for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Science & Technology Studies. The area of specialization, geographical focus, time period, and topic are open, but we are particularly interested in scholars working in Global STS. Specializations may include (but are not limited to): environmental STS such as climate change, environmental justice, sustainability, and the Anthropocene; indigenous STS; data justice; postcolonial/decolonial STS; law, science, and technology; technoscience and capitalism; public and global health; or public engagement with science and technology. A PhD in science and technology studies or a closely related field is required. The successful candidate will have an active research program in STS, be expected to play an important role in both graduate and undergraduate programs in the department, and be expected to offer courses of interest to Cornell undergraduates.

The STS Department has an active PhD program and runs two popular undergraduate majors: “Biology & Society” and “Science & Technology Studies.” The successful candidate will have a normal teaching load of 4 classes/year (generally one lower-division undergraduate course, one upper-division undergraduate course, one graduate seminar, and one additional course). Although a research specialty in the life sciences is not required, the successful candidate would be able to teach one of three core courses in the “Biology & Society” major: Ethical Issues in Health and Medicine; Ethics and the Environment; or Life Sciences & Society. Other teaching will depend on the candidate’s interests and departmental needs.
