The Gender and Diversity Studies (GDST) program at Xavier University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track or tenured position at the Assistant or Associate level to start in Fall 2020 with research and teaching specialties in critical ethnic, black, and/or race studies. Specialization in transnational feminism, decolonial work within the American context, or the legacy and effects/affects of enslavement in the United States are especially desired. The successful candidates will join and be actively involved in shaping a new departmental unit encompassing Xavier’s GDST and Sociology programs, in collaboration with the engaged group of faculty who comprise the GDST advisory committee. They will also contribute to our interdisciplinary Africana Studies program (which offers a minor) and the Race and Ethnicity concentration within the Gender and Diversity Studies major.

Position Responsibilities:

Research-active tenure-track and tenured faculty at Xavier typically teach three courses each semester, with course reductions granted for additional administrative or institutional responsibilities. The successful candidate will primarily offer courses in their area(s) of expertise, but will also have opportunities to collaborate with other disciplinary units and the university core program to offer courses. An active scholarly agenda in their area(s) of interest and service to the department and university as appropriate to rank and position are also expected.

The successful candidate will join Xavier faculty in the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts serving an increasingly diverse population of students. Xavier’s urban location in Cincinnati allows faculty to work with a range of community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is one of 15 of our 27 American Jesuit institutions that have earned the Carnegie Foundation's Community Engagement Classification (CE Classification). Nationally, we are one of 361 campuses who have received this designation since 2008. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University 20 years in a row among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities. Around 20% of Xavier’s undergraduate students identify as persons of color. Xavier University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without discrimination on the basis of race, skin color, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability.

Consistent with Xavier’s strategic plan, Xavier is committed to a diverse and inclusive environment; we welcome a broad spectrum of candidates, and particularly invite applications from women, ethnic and racial minorities, and other individuals who are under-represented in the profession. We seek a broad spectrum of candidates, of any faith tradition or no faith tradition, who are equally committed to fostering and engaging with a diversity of ideas and experiences and to creating an inclusive environment in the classroom and university setting. Xavier will sponsor a successful candidate’s visa if needed.

Required Qualifications:

• Terminal degree (Ph.D., M.F.A., or J.D.) in area of specialization by August, 2020. A broad range of degree specialties will be considered for this position.

• Open to candidates at both the tenure-track Assistant and tenured Associate level.
