BWSA Call for Contributors: Highlighting Black Women's Studies for Women's History Month
Call Overview
Every February, BWSA runs #28DaysofBWS, a social media campaign to highlight important texts that highlight Black women’s lives. This year, we are extending our Black History Month content with a special collaboration between the BWSA blog and social media editors. We invite BWSA community members to choose a Black Women’s Studies text to profile – these profiles will be posted to our Instagram account throughout March 2025 during Women’s History Month.
Profiles will not be traditional blog posts, but rather Instagram-friendly posts that summarize the chosen text in an accessible and engaging format. Book profiles will combine text with images in an 8-10 page Instagram post, similarly to an example here. We are looking for 4-5 contributors for this series.
Submission Instructions & Publication Timeline
Identify a Black Women’s Studies book that resonates with you. This could be a book you’ve loved for years or something you discovered recently. To be eligible for this series, books can be fiction or nonfiction, but must focus on the study of Black women’s lives.
Submit the interest survey (linked here) by 12pm ET on Friday, January 10, 2025
The interest survey asks for some general information about you (e.g., your name, email, affiliation(s), BWSA member status), which text you are interested in profiling, and a brief discussion on why you are interested in profiling that text.
The BWSA Blog Editor, Dr. Olivia Adams, and the Social Media Chair, Dr. Ka’Lyn Coghill, will review the submissions the afternoon of January 10 and send out invitations to create a profile
Invited contributors should create a list of 8 - 10 key quotes from the text to highlight. These quotes can be accompanied by short explanatory text created by the contributor (see the Alok Menon example). Invited contributors will receive an e-book copy of the chosen text (if you do not already have access to it).
Quote lists and accompanying text will be due by 12pm ET on January 24, 2025
Contributors will receive comments on their work by February 7, 2025 and will have until February 21 to make changes.
Profiles will be finalized for publication by February 28, and profiles will be posted on every Monday of March at 12pm ET on BWSA socials.
